On February 5, 2023, during the Brigade Uncasing of the Colors Ceremony and Brigade Change of Command and Responsibility, Colonel Carrie Perez and Command Sergeant Major Castillo relinquished command and responsibility of the 36th Sustainment Brigade to Colonel Gene Cummins and Command Sergeant Major Martin Zapata. As a token of appreciation for supporting the brigade, AUSA Region IV Executive Director Colonel (retired) James P. Hogan and AUSA North Texas – Audie Murphy Chapter President Dr. Patti McCoy were presented with the prestigious flag flown at the 36th Sustainment Brigade’s Command Post.
The transfer of authority ceremony is a military tradition representing the handoff of responsibility from one command to another to maintain continuity on the battlefield. Every command in the U.S. Army is represented by a distinctive flag known as “colors”. During the ceremony, the casing and uncasing of colors derive from a military tradition that originated centuries ago so soldiers could recognize and follow their unit’s colors into battle.
“Colonel Carrie Perez and Command Sergeant Major Castillo performed magnificently during a difficult twelve-month deployment,” said Dr. McCoy. President of the AUSA North Texas – Audie Murphy Chapter.
